Tamil is one of the world's oldest classical languages, with a literary tradition spanning over 2,000 years. Its elegant script is used by over 80 million speakers across India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Malaysia.

Unlike the complex character sets of other Indic scripts, Tamil has a remarkably streamlined alphabet.

Tamil has 13 vowels and 18 consonants and 11 vowel signs forming 247 compound characters.

What Makes Tamil Special

Tamil script is unique among Indian languages:

  • Fewer consonants: Only 18 base consonants (vs 33+ in Hindi)
  • No aspirated letters: Tamil doesn't distinguish between க and "kha"
  • Logical structure: The same vowel marks work consistently
  • Ancient heritage: The script evolved from Brahmi but simplified over time

Short vs Long Vowels

Tamil distinguishes between short and long vowels - this affects meaning:

அ (a)ஆ (ā)
இ (i)ஈ (ī)
உ (u)ஊ (ū)
எ (e)ஏ (ē)
ஒ (o)ஓ (ō)

The 18 Consonants (மெய்யெழுத்து)

Tamil has a compact consonant system organized by articulation:

The Vallinam, Mellinam, Idaiyinam System

Tamil consonants are grouped into three categories:

CategoryNameLettersCharacteristic
Hard (வல்லினம்)Vallinamக ச ட த ப றVoiceless stops
Soft (மெல்லினம்)Mellinamங ஞ ண ந ம னNasals
Medium (இடையினம்)Idaiyinamய ர ல வ ழ ளApproximants

This three-way classification is fundamental to Tamil grammar and pronunciation.

Vowel Signs (உயிர்மெய்யெழுத்து)

When vowels follow consonants, they combine into compound characters:

How Vowel Signs Work

With the consonant க (ka):

  • க + ா = கா (kā)
  • க + ி = கி (ki)
  • க + ு = கு (ku)
  • க + ே = கே (kē)
  • க + ை = கை (kai)

This pattern applies consistently to all 18 consonants, creating 216 compound characters (18 × 12).

The Full Character Set

Tamil's 247 characters come from:

  • 12 vowels (independent forms)
  • 18 consonants (with inherent "a" removed by pulli)
  • 216 consonant-vowel combinations (18 × 12)
  • 1 special character (ஃ - āytam)

The pulli (புள்ளி) is a dot placed above a consonant to indicate no vowel: க் = k (not ka).

The Grantha Letters

For Sanskrit and English loanwords, Tamil uses additional letters called Grantha:
